Interactive Display Window Concept for WeSC

The Interactive Art Director students at Hyper Island have been very busy lately. Among other things, they've produced this interactive display window concept for WeSC. Made by Beatriz Areilza, Gustaf Engström, Juliana Oliveira Silva, Lucas Lima & Marcus Wallander. Nice one!

Happy New Year!

2010 was a busy and super interesting year for Hyper Island. We started 2 new programs, we opened full time offices in the US and UK and for the first time we ran a Hyper Island Master Class in Asia. During the fall we were awarded with two really flattering awards - the Knowledge Award 2010 and Dagens Industri Gazelle 2010. Recently we were featured in Fast Company's "The Future of Advertising" campaign which highlighted the importance of Hyper Island in today's advertising industry and spawned some very interesting discussions.

We're really looking forward to 2011 and many more things to come. Stay tuned - because it will be at least as interesting as 2010!

Happy new year from all your friends at Hyper Island!

Hyper Island In Fast Company

Hyper Island is mentioned as an important part of the future of advertising in Danielle Sacks' Fast Company article. The URL gives away the code name Mayhem on Madison Avenue which is a great summary of the article as people in the industry are petrified over the digital development. In the article we can read comments from several attendees of Hyper Island's Master Class and their eye opening, or perhaps even epiphanic, experiences and how Hyper Island helped them tackle the digital arena and the future of advertising.

The article is a part of an initiative by Fast Company to explore the future of advertising and we are very curious to see what you think about it. Drop a comment here and tweet away with the hashtags #adfuture and #hyperisland or #himc if it's about us too!

Reflections From CAT

Hyper Island students Elin Aram and Annica Strand hosted a workshop at CAT during Internet Week Europe in London. We asked them to talk a bit about the experience.

"It all came to be when the marketing director of Hyper Island asked if we wanted to do a workshop at CaT, similar to a workshop we did earlier this fall for guests at Hyper Island. Annica was the one who got the brilliant idea of the "awesome workshop -combining awesome stuff to get a new awesome idea.", pitched it and made me really excited about it. Then we spent some time thinking of how to make it into a working process."

Our main goal was to make people reflect about how they could work differently and more creatively back at their offices. We had a great attendance at the workshop, we even had to turn people down due to lack of space and people came up to us after the lecture and told us they had a really great time. It felt truly great and we had a lot of fun!

The focus question for the workshop was "What could be the next talk of the town on CaT 2015". There was some very interesting ideas and lectures this year and most of them points to the main trend in five years of time will be the user experience, how we touch and move things and devices and how they can feel "magical"."

Thanks for a great workshop guys!

Concept Design Seminar for the UK NESTA Project

On Thursday last week Hyper Island in Manchester joined forces with industry influentials to design the concept for the new NESTA Project. NESTA (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) is an independent industry body in the UK supporting innovation and in a collaborative effort with Hyper Island a longer post graduate programme will be designed.

We’re really happy at Hyper Island to stand behind another great learning initiative that will educate today’s and tomorrow’s leaders.

Hero Food Movement Wins 3rd Price

From left: Olof Larsson, Raymo Ventura, Martine Emilie Fonstad-Smith, Hampus Lemhag, Mattis Forsman & Johan Svensson.

The Hyper Island blog would like to congratulate the pictured group of Hyper Island students for placing 3rd out of 198 (WOW!) in an OpenIDEO contest promoting fresh food.

The Hero Food movement group was born during the Idea Generation Week where one student from each class joined together for this project. The challenge was posted on, an online platform where people design together for social good. With the brief, “how can we raise kids' awareness of the benefits of fresh food so they can make better choices?” presented by Jamie Oliver, it gathered huge attention and almost 200 concepts were submitted.

Here is the initial brief and here is more on our great Hyper Island group.

Hello London!

For five days, eight students from Hyper Island flew to London to work with two briefs for Soup and Skive.
Their clients were ActionAid and NSCPP and the week resulted in a Hyper Island Workshop, a new blog and an upcoming article in New Media Age.

– We decided to call the group our ‘Hyper Helpers’, which we used as a hashtag on Twitter. We also asked the students to chronicle their experience across the week, which they did on, says Louis Clement, Creative Director at Skive.

- It is the feeling of inspiration and the love of the fact that it can come from nowhere that is magical about this job. I fell in love with digital because of its ability to consistently produce surprising, moving and exciting experiences that make our lives better and more interesting. And it was the Hyper Island students who reminded me why I wanted to work in this industry in the first place and I will remember it as one of the highlights of my time at Skive, says Senior Marketing Manager Tom Ollerton.

Also, read about the groups adventure at swedish daily, Dagens Media .

IDEO workshop

Last week Dario Buzzini and Fredrik Aidehag from IDEO in Germany visited us. They ran a workshop about centered user design and idea generation for the Interactive Art Directors students here at Hyper Island.

Lorenzo Calvani from the Digital Media program seized the opportunity to get some quotes regarding internship advice and what they thought about Hyper Island.

– We know that Hyper Island is like a magnet for very talented people. When we come here we want to introduce IDEO and inspire, as well as getting inspired by all the students.

Do you have any advice on how to apply for an internship at IDEO?
- A good advice is to apply for one of the european offices. Your chances of hearing back from us then will definitely increase.

6x10 project

Meet the Digital Media 11 students, Andreas Kleiner and Daniel Dominguez. They are a creative team who is now looking for an internship somewhere around the world.

The guys decided to start a creative team after working on different projects together.

– We're both very interested in storytelling and the human interaction of things, and think we really benefit for having different backgrounds and upbringing, say Daniel who found Hyper Island thru a friend.

To promote themselves they created the 6x10 project.
– Its basically 6 projects done in 10 days each. Concept, strategy and design all executed in a case study at the end of those ten days. We choose 4 clients randomly through experiments and then just went with it. So far we been doing 2/6 projects and just started on our third.

– I guess we want to come to a place that likes to push boundaries, likes to work with real human-interaction campaigns and has a good work environment where we can excel but importantly can learn from our mistakes.

"Every industry will have a digital branch to it"

Yesterday, the new students at Hyper Island participated in a panel debate with invited people from the industry.
Topic for the debate?
- The future of the digital industries - upcoming trends and tendencies.

The Hyper Island blog had the chance to ask two of the panel members where they think the digital industry will be in five years!

Sophie H. Kleber, Experience Lead, HUGE:
– Will there be a digital industry? Every industry will have a digital branch to it, which means that everything will be touched by and co-exist in the digital space. "Digital" people will need to become generalists who know of technology, devices, trends and industrial behaviors, and industry-specific people will need to grow the "digital experts of their field".

Per Jaldeberg, Planning Director at Saatchi & Saatchi, Stockholm.
– The digital industry will evolve to a post digital industry with activation and participation as mantras. Post digital agencies involve people around an idea rather than sending messages to them. These post digital agencies will not only spring from digital agencies of today, but from so called traditional agencies as well.

"It's pretty much like the first time I learned how to swim"

Sarper Erel just started the Mobile Applications Program. Tell us a little bit what it feels like to be a student at Hyper Island!

– It is simply great. Maybe I should tell how we are doing things here. It's pretty much like the first time I learned how to swim. My dad had basically left me in water. First it was scary and seem impossible to succeed but eventually it didn't take a lot of time for me to keep myself above water. I think this is pretty much what Hyper Island does to us. The difference is they bring Michael Phelps (speakers/lecturers) into the pool to inspire from!

Why did you choose the Mobile Applications Program?

– I've heard of Hyper Island 4 years ago. My intention has always been to apply Digital Media but just at the point that a rocket called "mobile industry" take of, Hyper Island initiated the Mobile Applications Program. And I said, "This is it! I am applying right now."

What has been the best with Hyper Island so far?

– Definitely the people here! I still can't believe how easy for people here to communicate, understand and work with each other. Nothing like I have ever experienced before. I think this is what makes Hyper Island very special.

Idea generation week at Hyper Island!

It´s Idea generation week at Hyper Island. This is where all new students get mixed up in groups and experience new ways of thinking.

"The Idea generation week has been fun, challenging and energizing! I think I've had about a billion ideas during these past 3 days; it's really amazing to see what can come out of your head when you're running around, discussing with others or making funny noises in a Hyper Island Orchestra! It was great to finally be given a brief to work on and mixing all the classes together was very exciting as you get a whole bunch of inspiration from the other students! Shame it was only 3 days...."

The Hyper Island Way Week starts today.

All of Hyper Island’s programs start off with a team-bulding course. The overall objective of the course is for the participants to become more efficient as group members and as leaders.
We believe that learning takes place when you are exposed to different situations and they way in that you handle the specific task that has been put before you. Reflection, group dynamics and understanding your own role are the keys to this process.

During the first weeks at Hyper Island, students focus on:
– Strengthening your knowledge about themselves,
– Understanding how a group develops,
– Personal development, as an individual and as a team member.

This will lay the foundation for all upcoming work at Hyper Island, where students, almost exclusively, will work in groups, giving a lot of attention to the group process but also to their own personal development.

How's your summer: Linnéa Becker

How did you spend your summer?

"I've spent most of the summer in New York so far, actually doing some work for Hyper Island! I've been helping them with organizing and planning before and during two Master Classes in July.
It has been very interesting to see Hyper Island in another context. I've also spent a couple of days in Montauk, 3 hours north of NY, a lovely place with a lot of sea food and nice beaches. Going back to Sweden now to hopefully get some lazy days in the archipelago with a DN in one hand and a glas of mellanmljök in the other."

What are you most looking forward to when coming back to Hyper Island?

"I'm looking forward to meet everyone again and to get started with Final Project! I'm really looking forward to start creating something together with a team again."

Foresquare vs Gowalla, what is your take on that?

"I find the services quite uninteresting as they are but using their API for other services can definitly make them more valuable..".

Monday, August 2, 2010

How's your summer Alexander Gårdenberg

Alexander is a Digital Media student in Karlskrona.

How have you spent your summer.
" I've spent two weeks in Thailand, in a large house (800 square meters) with a private chauffeur and four chefs, so that was pretty sweet. It is great to visit Thailand this time of year, even though it rains a a lot. I've also spent a week on Gotland and most importantly I haven't been working at all!"

What are you most looking forward to, when returning to Hyper Island in a couple of weeks?
" Meeting the new students. A few of my friends will be starting on the new programs in Karlskrona, but also to really make the most of the last months before our internship period starts."

Final question, Fouresquare vs Gowalla has been a hot topic this summer. What do you think?
"Foursquare, definitely. The brand is stronger and feels more reliable."

Buz joins Hyper Island in New York

We're stepping up our stateside presence with the help of a new adviser, former head of Wieden + Kennedy, New York, Buz Sawyer. Mr. Sawyer has joined Hyper Island to lead its U.S. expansion strategy after leaving his post as managing director of Wieden + Kennedy in April.
While Mr. Sawyer, a strategic development adviser, admits he's not a digital expert, he believes his experience clocking time at agencies affords Hyper Island the chance to better attract candidates to its program from U.S. shops. "They know digital, they know education, but what they don't know is the U.S. ad agency business," said Mr. Sawyer of his new employer. "My job is to figure out strategies for them to grow, both short and long term." Read the full article here

Wood turned into gold

Hyper Island graduate Richard Engström struck gold at Cannes Lions for his participation in the Tansu shoe campaign for Onitsuku Tiger.

Since the start of Made Of Japan campaign in 2007, trainer brand Onitsuku Tiger has created a series of shoe sculptures, each representing different aspects of Japanese culture. The 'Tansu' celebrates the Japanese woodworking tradition.

Richard Engström graduated from Hyper Island in 2006. He now works for Amsterdam Worldwide. Besides winning gold, his team was nominated for four other Lions, one more for the Tansu Shoe and the other three for an Asics campaign.

Congrats, Richard!

A letter from Cannes

Last week Hyper Island sent a few co-workers to Cannes, a letter got sent back home: Here's what they wrote:

"We had one mission; to get to know as many new people as possible. Well, maybe a mission and a half: we also wanted to have some fun. We did both!

We congratulated of our friends, winning lion after lion, we had drinks with amazing people from all over the world, we had chats with agencies on how to change the world of communication. We talked about Hyper Island in New York, in Sweden, in Australia, in South Africa. In Norway, in Manchester, in LA, in.... well, basically everywhere. We talked to Spike Jonze when we were at the screening of his new short story, I'm here - A love story in an Absolut world, by our friends at TBWA\Chiat\Day, New York.

- We hugged Bob Greenberg , and took a photo of it,
- We mingled through the Massive Music Party...

I'm so glad we did all of this, because we met a lot of new friends, we had a lot of fun, and we spread the word about Hyper Island. I hope I'll get to see you all in Cannes next year, accepting your lions, enjoying the sun or networking like crazy."

(Maria Eriksson is Director Of Executive Education at our New York office.)
